The Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) report for Q1 2023 released last week by The Mission to Seafarers identifies a return to growing frustrations among respondents, following a period of rising happiness.

Disappointingly, seafarer happiness in Q1 2023 fell to 7.1/10 compared to 7.69/10 reported in Q4 2022.

The survey plays a pivotal role in the maritime industry, acting as a barometer of key challenges facing those at sea and highlighting areas for improvement. In this case, the survey has identified a need for improvement in perennial such as welfare services, shore leave, as well as workload, insufficient entertainment options onboard impeding social cohesion, amongst other issues.
